MP Dari Backs Easter Campaign to Save Lives Stockton South MP, Dari Taylor, will join firefighters tomorrow (Friday 18 March, 10:00am ) at ASDA in Thornaby to lend her support to a new campaign to ensure every home has a working smoke alarm. The “Egg for an Alarm” scheme, organised by Cleveland Fire Brigade, involves shoppers buying a chocolate Easter egg which they will then exchange for a life-saving smoke alarm. The egg is then donated by the Fire Brigade to a local children’s hospital or care home. Dari commented, “There are nearly 140 house fires every day in Britain and every year 270 people die in these fires because they don’t have working smoke alarms. We know how many lives can be saved by smoke alarms – fires are twice as likely to be fatal in homes without them. That is why the Egg for an Alarm campaign is such a tremendous idea and one which I am proud to be part of. It is such a simple scheme, donating chocolate in exchange for a life-saving device but it is one which will not only save lives but will give Easter eggs to children in hospital or in care who would otherwise not be getting anything this Easter.” Firefighters will be out in force at the ASDA store and Dari is delighted to be involved. She continued, “The Egg for an Alarm campaign is a great opportunity for the fire brigade to work with the local supermarket and the residents of Thornaby to publicise their Home Fire Safety Checks and raise awareness about the benefits of smoke alarms. Everybody who does not have a working smoke alarm or would like to donate to local children should be down at ASDA tomorrow - we all want to see a safer community and we know that smoke alarms save lives. Hopefully we can get as many shoppers as possible to take part, improving fire safety and giving to a very good cause. |
